orthodontist in bloomingdaleWhile most people would love the option to avoid traditional metal braces and discreetly straighten their teeth with clear aligners, it may not be the best option for them. Some people are good candidates for clear aligner treatment, but there are others that require the use of wires and brackets to get the perfect smile they want. Our orthodontist in Bloomingdale explains why clear aligners might not benefit everyone and how traditional braces are still a great choice!

Metal Braces vs. Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are a series of customized, removable plastic aligners that get you your ideal smile while remaining nearly invisible, while traditional metal braces are affixed to the teeth with brackets and wires. With clear aligners, patients follow a schedule of custom aligners that put increased pressure on the teeth over time, while traditional braces are tightened by our orthodontist to straighten them gradually. Both are effective treatments (depending on the severity of your orthodontic case).

Why Not Clear Aligners?

In moderate to severe orthodontic cases, clear aligners may not be able to permanently correct jaw abnormalities, solve problems involving extra teeth or missing teeth, or address severe misalignments. Clear aligners will either have little to no effect or can even worsen your bite, depending on your case. For people with extreme misalignment, jaw surgery, tooth removal, or spacers may be necessary prior to beginning treatment to ensure a good outcome.

Choosing Metal Braces

While metal braces might not be your first choice, they may be the best choice to effectively and predictably straighten your teeth. They are a tried-and-true method and remain an option for good reason. Thankfully, modern braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever before! Our orthodontist can discuss your options with you during your appointment.
