Adult Orthodontia – It’s Not  “Just for Children” anymore! According to the American Association of Orthodontists, there has been a consistent increase in the number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment since 2010. There are many reasons for the increase. First and foremost is that adults are living longer, so orthodontics should be a part of your overall healthcare plan.

As an orthodontic specialist, my focus throughout the adult orthodontia process is not only on straightening your teeth, but on correcting your bite as well. A good bite enables you to bite and chew food properly, which aids in digestion and the ability of the body to receive proper nutrition. Misaligned jaws can lead to migraines and speech impediments. A poor bite can lead to periodontal disease, because it's difficult to brush and floss adequately when the teeth are not properly aligned. Periodontal disease is evidenced by gum redness or bleeding while brushing and/or flossing your teeth. It can lead to bad breath, soft tissue damage, gum disease, tooth loss, and even bone loss. Severe periodontal infection caused by bacteria forming underneath the gum has been associated with an increased risk for atherosclerosis, coronary disease, strokes, complications with diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and respiratory diseases. Studies show that individuals who properly brush and floss every day are likely to live longer.

The choice to pursue adult orthodontia is now an easy one! No longer do adults need to struggle with the choice of foregoing orthodontic treatment or being seen with metal braces as an adult. With all of the innovative treatment options available today, adults can achieve a beautiful and healthy new smile with some of the nearly “invisible” options today such as Invisalign clear aligners and clear braces such as TP ceramics and Damon ceramics.
